Bulldog Spirit Songs

Think you know all there is to know about Georgia? Here are the lyrics to some traditional Georgia songs.

Glory
Tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic
Arranged by Hugh Hodgson, ’15

Glory, glory to old Georgia!
Glory, glory to old Georgia!
Glory, glory to old Georgia!
G-E-O-R-G-I-A!

Glory, glory to old Georgia!
Glory, glory to old Georgia!
Glory, glory to old Georgia!
And to Hell with Georgia Tech!

Alma Mater
Tune: AMICI
Words by J.B. Wright, ’14
Arranged by Hugh Hodgson, ’15

Verse 1: From the hills of Georgia’s northland
Beams thy noble brow,
And the sons of Georgia rising
Pledge with sacred vow.

Chorus: Alma Mater, thee we’ll honor,
True and loyal be,
Ever crowned with praise and glory,
Georgia, hail to thee.

Verse 2: ‘Neath the pines trees’ stately shadowa
Spread thy riches rare,
And the sons, dear Alma Mater,
Will thy treasures share.

CHORUS

Verse 3: Through the ages, Alma Mater,
Men will look to thee;
Thou the fairest of the Southland,
Georgia’s Varsity.

CHORUS

Going Back
Words by Morton S. Hodgson, ’08
Traditional music arranged by Hugh Hodgson, ’15

Going back, going back,
Going back to Athens town.
Going back, going back,
To the best old place around.

Going back, going back,
To hear that grand old sound
Of a chapel bell and a Georgia yell,
Going back to Athens town.

Georgia Bulldogs
Thanks to Harold Miller for sending this in.  He wrote “When I went to freshman orientation (1969), we learned another song.  Our group leader was Bob Hurley and he
taught the following:

Oh, there are no Georgia Bulldogs down in Hell, Hell No!
Oh, there are no Georgia Bulldogs down in Hell, Hell No!
There are some tigers and bees, Yellow Jackets and some fleas,
But there are no Georgia Bulldogs down in Hell – HELL NO !!!

Hail to Georgia
Music and words by Gaines W. Walter, ’15
Arranged by Hugh Hodgson, ’15

Hail to Georgia down in Dixie,
A college honored, fair and true.
The Red and Black is her standard
Proudly it waves,
Streaming today and the ages through.
She’s the fairest of the Southland,
We’ll pledge our love to her for aye.
To that college dear
We’ll raise a cheer
All hail to dear old U-G-A!

She’s the Daughter of the Red and Black
Words and music by Ernest Rogers

She’s the daughter of the Red and Black,
She’s for Georgia and she’ll never take it back.
Can’t hold herself in check,
When she yells “To hell with Tech,”
Or the yellow jackets give her any slack,
When she dances she’s a dream,
Reg’lar sugar coated cream,
Her red lips and black eyes are fair to see.
Glory, glory to old Georgia,
That’s the song my Georgia baby sings to me.

I Want to Go Back to U-G-A
Words and first arrangement by C.T. Conyers, ’22
Re-arranged according to usage by Hugh Hodgson, ’15

I want to go back to U-G-A,
Back to dear old Athens town,
Back where we say “To Hell with Tech!
Back to where I spend my check.
Want to go back to U-G-A,
Back to dear old Athens town
Want-a go back,
Gotta go back
To U-G, U-G, G-E-O-R-G-I-A.

Bulldog Marching Song

Georgia! Georgia! Hear the Bulldog growl!
Scrapping, snapping, listen to him howl!
Here he comes a running to the field,
Georgia’s team is never going to yield.
Win or lose, the other fellow knows
Georgia fights until the whistle blows.
Red and Black wave on for Georgia’s Varsity
And Georgia’s victory!
